Following the significant theft of cryptocurrency on the Poloniex exchange, the hacker responsible has begun transferring large amounts of Ethereum (ETH) to the Tornado Cash mixing service, according to information provided by the Arkham platform. A total of 1,126.1 ETH, equivalent to over $3.4 million, was transferred in 20 different transactions between Monday and Tuesday. This marks the hacker’s initial engagement with the controversial cryptocurrency mixer.
The Poloniex robbery occurred in early November and resulted in the theft of $56 million in ETH, $48 million in Tron (TRX), $18 million in Bitcoin (BTC), as well as smaller amounts in other digital assets. Despite offering a 5% white hat reward, which went unaccepted by the criminal, the exchange, owned by Tron founder Justin Sun, has been unable to recover the stolen funds. According to Arkham, the hacker currently holds approximately $181.47 million in crypto assets in their main address.
Justin Sun-affiliated entities have recently been frequent targets of cyberattacks. In September, HTX, another exchange linked to Sun, suffered an exploit resulting in a loss of approximately 4,999 ETH, valued at $7.9 million, as reported by blockchain security company PeckShield.
Further attacks occurred in November, when both HTX and Heco Bridge were compromised, resulting in a total loss of $100 million, according to cybersecurity company Cyvers. More recently, in January, HTX experienced a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, causing a brief service outage. DDoS attacks aim to overload a website’s infrastructure with excessive traffic in order to take the service offline.
