Elon Musk, the brilliant CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink, is embarking on a quest to find a new volunteer who will test an advanced brain implant. In a recent tweet, Musk referred to the device as a “telepathy cybernetic brain implant that allows you to control your phone and computer just by thinking.” This search for a volunteer is part of the second phase of testing for this groundbreaking device that promises to completely transform the way we interact with technology.
Neuralink, the company founded by Musk, is primarily focused on the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that can help individuals with severe neurological conditions control electronic devices using nothing but their thoughts. While no specific details about the test have been disclosed yet, Neuralink has chosen to remain silent on social media regarding this matter.
The latest update on Neuralink’s PRIME (Pilot Research Implant for Medical Experimentation) study invites individuals to sign up as volunteers. This study aims to test the N1 chip, a fully implantable and wireless BCI device. The chip is known for its intricate design, consisting of thousands of thin wires that penetrate the brain to enable direct communication with computers.
Despite its remarkable innovations, Neuralink has not been without its fair share of controversy. The company has faced criticism for alleged fatalities in animal tests, although Musk vehemently denies these accusations. Additionally, Neuralink has been criticized for a lack of transparency regarding the calibration and maintenance of their monitoring equipment.
Neuralink is currently accepting applications for the second participant in their study.
Elon Musk himself shared a tweet showcasing the telepathy cybernetic brain implant, emphasizing its ability to control phones and computers through thought. The tweet features Noland Arbaugh (@ModdedQuad), the first patient to test the implant, who shares his firsthand experience with the device. Arbaugh, who is paralyzed from the shoulders down, has been able to play video games, browse the internet, and control a computer cursor solely through his thoughts. He even broke world speed records after the chip was implemented.
It has recently been revealed that during the initial human test, the wires of the implant became dislodged. However, Neuralink was able to restore the functionality of the device through adjustments in algorithms.
Considering the risks associated with this technology, competing companies like Precision Neuroscience are exploring less invasive methods, offering a safer approach to recording brain activity.
To be eligible for the Neuralink study, individuals must be over 18 years old, reside in the United States or Canada, and face significant challenges such as quadriplegia or paraplegia. Those interested can register through the Neuralink Patient Registry.
