Rob Habermeier, one of the co-founders of Polkadot, recently introduced an innovative concept known as “Plaza”. This groundbreaking system structure aims to consolidate the functionalities of parachains into a single chain in order to enhance the network’s scalability. By unifying these elements, Habermeier believes that it can address the significant usability challenges faced by users and developers due to the current fragmentation.
The “Plaza” system is designed not only to streamline asset and smart contract management but also to facilitate better interactions between decentralized applications (dApps) and liquidity providers through reduced fees and more efficient bridges. The foundation of this evolutionary chain is the existing AssetHub, which supports a wide range of portfolios and tool integrations.
A key feature of Habermeier’s proposal is the implementation of Elastic Scaling, which he believes will allow Polkadot to meet growing demands on a single chain up to a critical threshold. At that point, resources and functionalities can be distributed to alleviate the pressure. Habermeier passionately articulated this vision, stating: “We need to collaborate as an ecosystem to push a single chain to its limits and then redistribute applications, users, and system functionalities. Polkadot has the capabilities to support this scale that the world requires. The city needs to expand from its core, and that core should be the Square.”
Additionally, Polkadot’s co-founder envisions that “Plaza” could eventually incorporate identity and governance features, further expanding the network’s capabilities. He emphasizes that while the transition to a new chain may initially impact other parts of the network, it will ultimately drive Polkadot’s ongoing growth.
Habermeier likens the idea of “Plaza” to global metropolises, envisioning it as the New York City, Dubai, London, or Shenzhen of the Polkadot continent—a pioneering megacity paving the way for further expansion. He believes that this plan can be executed with enthusiasm, knowing that when Plaza reaches its capacity, Polkadot (or JAM) will possess the validated computing power necessary to handle such growth.
The proposal aims to consolidate the following resources into a single parachain system, evolving from AssetHub and scaling to its maximum potential:
– Asset issuance (currently on AssetHub)
– Smart Contracts (Rust and EVM via RISC-V/PolkaVM)
– Staking (currently in the relay chain)
– Bridge Pallets (currently on the BridgeHub parachain)
– Near-zero fees (until scaling limits are reached)
